Breathing New Life: Dakota’s Health Journey

For most of his life, Dakota’s experiences with healthcare had been shaped by fear and mistrust. But that changed when he started receiving care from the Thames Valley Family Health Team (FHT).

“When I hear I’m coming here, I feel happy. I get excited,” Dakota shares. “They gave me the motivation and encouragement to change my life even more. I never thought I’d quit cigarettes, but here I am, nine months smoke-free. This team has helped me change my life.”

Dakota was referred to the Thames Valley FHT by his physician, after experiencing ongoing breathing struggles. He was using three to four puffers a day, and was finding it difficult to quit smoking. After a short time working with a respiratory therapist, the changes were nothing short of remarkable.

Dakota has quit smoking cigarettes, reduced sugar in his diet, and improved his physical health. He is down to one puffer a day.

“I’m eating more and at proper times. I used to only have one meal a day,” Dakota explained. “Now, I wake up and realize I’m hungry. My body feels different. My teeth are whiter, my gums are healthier, and I feel stronger.”

These changes have also opened the door to new opportunities for Dakota. “I’m more active, more confident, and I’m not as down and out as I used to be,” he shares proudly. “I’m even inspiring others to quit smoking. Five people in my complex have quit because I did.”

An ongoing journey

“I’ve learned that change doesn’t happen overnight,” Dakota reflected. He is working with the team to completely quit nicotine and find healthier coping mechanisms for his cravings and PTSD. “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. I’m focusing on the next hour, the next day.”

However his future looks brighter than ever. With a healthier approach to daily living, he’s looking forward to milestones like watching his kids graduate and supporting others in their community. “I want to help people the way this place has helped me.”

For Dakota, this is a new beginning. “There’s a new Dakota now. I’m stronger, healthier, and more hopeful than I’ve ever been. And I owe so much of that to this team.”
